Flowerpots- Raphael Sommerhalder 2008.
The protagonist had a crack on his pot and goes on a journey to fix it. Visually this short film is pleasing to the eye. The character looks like a middle age man, jumping instead of walking. The crack is nicely done, it could symbolise how a person feels and how we all try to fix yourselves. Making the character jump around, is similar how we go throughout lives in a step at a time. The lack of colour, makes his journey more enjoyable, but also emotionless. We see his movement and we understand what his goal is, but we never know how does the character feel. How does he feel? I think that was made intentionally, so the viewer would just understand his journey more. As the character reaches a certain point, he looks up and understands that he needs to reach the top. After that, he pulls a ladder out of his jacket. Then, he reaches the top and pushes the ladder away. He looks up, position himself under a cloud where he pursues, by digging a hole in the ground. Then he proceeds by taking a hammer and breaking the old vase, and tries to balance himself, and attempts to walk to the hole. This scene has an interesting mean to it, it reminds me of a quote that goes, “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the present.” Since it was a mystery of what he would next. At the end he takes out an enormous stick, that he uses to hit a cloud so it could rain on him.
