Week 4 – Thursday – 20th of October X

In todays lesson, Tess talked about how to use loops as a narrative strategy. In a loop, there is different ways to see it or to understand it. When you see it for the first time is different then when you watched for the second or third time. The story becomes more interesting by using this method correctly.

One of the examples that showed that perfectly:

Bimbos Initiation (1931) Fleisher Studios!

This animation an enjoyed it, since it I like the old aesthetic from the old traditional animation. Even if it’s black and white, I still enjoy the journey. Having this kinda cartoon showed to me, made me nostalgic to see more of this style of cartoon, since it was also when animation was still new. In those days, Fleisher studios and disney had a healthy competition. You can see that in the beginning of the film, you see a mouse resembling the famous disney character ”Mickey mouse”. After Bimbo falls into the sewers, a mouse that looks similar to ”Mickey Mouse’, locking Bimbo in the sewer. For me, that was directed to disney. In this film we follow Bimbo, as he slides into a room, where there is a lot of men asking if Bimbos wanted to be a member. With this I was really concerned, since this animation was probably for children at the time. Continuing with the film, Bimbo declines their offer to join. After so, Bimbo was transported to different rooms, to be tortured very time, Bimbo said no to become a member. I consider that as peer pressure. After a while of Bimbo saying no, the man undressed himself to reveal he was a beautiful woman, when she asked Bimbo if he wanted to be a member he then accepted in a heart beat. Talking about the looping exercise, there is a lot of loop and these loops you can understand a lot. A loop also can be a point in time that repeats, so you could benefit from this by telling the looping story from different angles.

That was actually the exercise today, to find a certain place in time where you can loop and tell a story from a different perspective. For today, I decided to go with the first story, where two animal characters, that one wanting a bone and the other wanting honey.

I decided to use the moment where the bear is trying to catch the honey and wanted to create a loop there, by using some details from other stories that I made and kinda mix with this one. Since Tess wanted us to make at least 30 panels, which I only made eight last time, so the pressure was on. To make the loop easier, I decided to cut my storyboard in to pieces. Placing them side by side, and see where it should be a loop. So, I came up with a idea to prolong it.
